Faust Harrison Pianos is well known as New York’s source for the best American pianos (Steinway and Mason & Hamlin) and for that sensation from Europe, the Estonia. A few years ago, in response to growing interest among our clients in the super-high-end European makes, we carefully scrutinized all of the contenders and found that we were most impressed with the Blüthner. Blüthner pianos have extraordinary German engineering with unsurpassed fit and finish; a precise, silken touch unrivaled by the touch of any piano we have ever known; and the tone is quintessential high-end German: crisp, clean and pure. When we played the great classics on the Blüthner (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven), we heard glorious sounds that we never noticed before; the ethereal sounds of Debussy became even more ethereal on the Blüthner. No wonder composers like Liszt, Brahms, Wagner, Tschaikowsky, Debussy, Shostakovich, Lloyd Weber, and even the Beatles composed much of their music on Blüthner pianos.

Once we decided that the Blüthner piano was the choice for us, we were delighted to learn that the Blüthner company was the right one for us as well. We’ve long had strong, close ties to the families that own and operate the Mason & Hamlin and Estonia companies and so immediately felt at home with the Blüthner family. They’ve been manufacturing Blüthner pianos for over 150 years, passing the reigns and the passion from generation to generation in a way and to a degree that is seen in no other piano company in the world.

For the past two years, Blüthner pianos have been part of the select group of instruments that we’ve been offering for sale in our New York locations and they’ve become widely admired among our amateur and professional pianist clients alike. Michael has elected to play the Blüthner model 1 in concert because of its “exceptional control and pure bell-like sound.” It is a natural complement to his music. It was also a delightful surprise for us to learn that these terrific qualities are true not only of the grands but of the Blüthner uprights as well. At first, we couldn’t imagine why an upright should cost as much as a good baby grand, but the answer came soon enough. We have never played an upright like this one before. Sara says that she would take this upright piano over many of the baby grands in the market today, and many of our clients agree.

We welcome you to come for a visit and to see, play and hear the remarkable new Bluthner pianos.

Blüthner

Since 1853 the Blüthner piano company has been manufacturing the finest European pianos from their factory in Leipzig, Germany. After studying the art of piano making in the piano-rich region of Saxony, Julius Bluthner started his small company with three workers and desire to create the world’s best pianos. The Blüthner piano company quickly gained a reputation among concert pianists for producing instruments with pure, rich sound and responsive touch. Production increased rapidly and after winning the highest awards at several international piano competitions, Blüthner was appointed as the official supplier to many European royal courts including those of the German Kaiser, Queen Victoria, the Russian Tsar, the Danish King, the Turkish Sultan, and the King of Saxony.

Today, Blüthner pianos continue to be handcrafted in Leipzig. The company remains family owned and operated, as it has throughout its rich 150-year history. The Blüthner family’s ongoing commitment to using the best possible materials and craftsmanship has resulted in the production of one of the world’s finest instruments and one of Germany’s greatest treasures.

SOUNDBOARD

The Blüthner piano company uses clear, quarter-sawn solid spruce to create a soundboard with extraordinary resonance. Master craftsmen select flawless boards with extremely tight growth rings. Careful manufacturing assures the greatest responsiveness due to an optimal ratio of elasticity to density.

Unlike those of other pianos, Blüthner soundboards are crowned so that the highest portion is directly under the treble bridge. This uncommon feature provides the most support where down-bearing force is greatest. The result is a more uniform transmission of tone throughout the entire keyboard

RIMS

The materials, design, and craftsmanship used to create a piano’s rim will correlate directly with the lifespan of the instrument. The best pianos will have thick, hard rims, which support the soundboard. Blüthner’s massive rims are crafted from hardwood beech and ensure that each instrument will last a lifetime –decades longer than a piano with thinner or softer rims.

The outer rim is made in two halves using up to 7 layers of veneer, laminated crosswise with water resistant glue. The inner rim is laminated using at least 14 layers of select beech. These parts are carefully stored until uniform moisture content of 8% plus/minus 1.5% is reached

STRINGS

The treble strings and the core wire are of highest grade, strong, elastic steel wire. The high precision in production avoids differences in diameters, which ensures a clear tone without any falseness. The bass strings are spun with hexagonal core wire that assures that their exterior copper wrapping will remain tight and secure throughout the lifetime of the instrument. Each string is individually hitched to create a clear, pure sound.

The Blüthner piano company is well known for its patented Aliquot System which includes a fourth string for all notes in the highest portion of the treble section. These strings are raised slightly so as never to be struck by the instrument’s hammers. However, the fourth strings vibrate sympathetically resulting in a more colorful tone than other instruments.

IRON FRAME

The iron frame takes on the force from the strings under tension and must be firmly connected with the inner casing under structure. Blüthner has developed an iron frame that is reinforced along the main tensile lines of force. It is not only important to have an appealing and timeless design; the frame also has to be able to affect the instrument’s acoustics. Blüthner’s many years of experience and knowledge in iron frame design ensure that no audible amount of tonal spectrum is lost. In fact, the iron frame does indeed contribute to the tonal development of the Blüthner piano.

ACTION

A well-designed and carefully constructed action gives the pianist complete control of his instrument. Renner actions, hand-crafted in Germany, are widely recognized by technicians and pianists to be the best in the world. A Renner action, customized according to Blüthner’s specifications, provides a smooth and fluid touch. All parts are made of select sound hardwood, free from imperfections. All critical action felts and cloths are made of 100% wool, with a manufacturer’s moth-resistant treatment, and attain the highest felt and cloth standards. Center pins are of nickel silver. All center-pin bushing material is pre-shrunk. The actions of all Blüthner pianos are designed and thoroughly tested for optimum performance and longevity.
