Faust Harrison Pianos is the only authorized Yamaha dealer in New York City,
Westchester, Long Island and North Eastern New Jersey.
In addition to carrying Yamaha’s complete line of new pianos, we also have the area’s largest inventory of pre-owned Yamaha pianos. While used Yamaha pianos cost less than a comparable model new Yamaha piano, it is important to know that not all used Yamaha pianos are the same.
Selecting a used Yamaha piano requires research and being aware that:
- Yamaha models since 2001 are much higher quality than older models
- Many used Yamaha’s are inferior ‘Gray Market’ pianos
- Yamaha provides genuine Yamaha replacement parts only for pianos that are not ‘Gray Market’.
- Only authorized Yamaha dealers can provide a 5-year Yamaha Factory Warranty on used Yamaha pianos
It should also be noted that factory authorized used Yamaha pianos often cost around the same price as non-authorized used Yamaha pianos. Furthermore, for certain model types, a brand new Yamaha piano can be purchased for little more than the cost of an inferior or Gray Market used Yamaha piano.
Yamaha ‘Gray Market’ Pianos
When selecting a used Yamaha piano, it is important to confirm that the piano is authorized by Yamaha. Many non-Yamaha piano retailers import and sell used “Gray Market” Yamaha pianos. These imported Gray Market pianos are not authorized by Yamaha for sale in North America. The most serious problems with these pianos are that:
- Gray Market pianos are pianos built for the Japanese and Asian markets that are generally humid year-round. When these pianos are re-located to dry climates (such as the American North East in winter), they often develop technical problems. This is why Yamaha does not authorize their sale in the U.S.
- Genuine Yamaha factory replacement parts are not available for Gray Market pianos; Yamaha will only sell parts to a dealer or certified technician if the piano has a serial number that indicates it is a piano built for the U.S. market. Consequently, owners of Gray Market pianos that develop technical problems are sometimes faced with unusually high costs and inconvenience.
- Gray Market pianos are not eligible for Yamaha’s factory warranty service.

Because of these problems, Gray Market Yamaha pianos do not have the same resale value as authorized Yamaha pianos. What may seem at first to be a ‘great deal’ on a used Yamaha piano may prove to be a fairly poor deal.
Fortunately, it is easy to learn if a used Yamaha piano is an authorized used piano. The piano's serial number will identify whether it is authorized or not.
