The Mason & Hamlin piano was designed by Richard Gertz, one of the world’s foremost piano designers of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Trained by the great piano masters at the Blüthner and Bösendorfer factories in Europe, he helped to design and build modern Steinway pianos before moving on to design and build the Mason & Hamlin pianos. It is no wonder that the tonal qualities of Mason & Hamlin pianos are similar to those of Steinway pianos. It is also no wonder that Mason & Hamlin pianos are in a variety of ways more sophisticated and advanced than Steinways and much more durable. Today’s Mason & Hamlins are meticulously handcrafted in Haverhill, Massachusetts to the highest standards in the industry with materials and parts that we find to be equal or superior to the materials and parts found in new Steinways.

Several years ago, in a direct comparison of new Steinway B (6’ 11”) and new Mason & Hamlin BB (7’ 0”) grand pianos, 280 professional pianists compared their tonal qualities and found them to be equally preferable. However, these pianists recognized and preferred the superior action mechanism in the Mason & Hamlins. Two out of three of these pianists preferred the touch of the Mason & Hamlins to the touch of the Steinways.

The model A Mason & Hamlin (5’ 8”) piano is just one inch longer than Steinway model M (5’ 7”), but it is a richer and more orchestral piano than the model M. Indeed, as can be seen in the accompanying comparison sheet, the Mason & Hamlin model A is more appropriately compared to the Steinway models O or L (5’ 11”).

We offer our Mason & Hamlin grands at prices that are substantially below MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) and we include an adjustable artist bench and one in-home tuning. We also include an extraordinarily comprehensive concert prep. This assures that the pianos that we sell are perfect and concert-ready the day that they arrive in the home. A 12-year manufacturer’s warranty covers every part of the Mason & Hamlin piano.
